The Fokker Triplane will always be remembered by the general public and noted German pilot aces, as the favorite warbird of World War I. This airplane was designed for dogfighting, so it was engineered for quick climbing and for tight turning. From his first flight in early 1916, until he started to fly the DR1's in 1918 Lt. Jacobs had several victories, Jacobs also received the Knight's Cross with Swords in August of 1917, by which time he already held the Iron Cross. 1st and 2nd Class. in early 1918 he began flying the Fokker Triplane, painted in all black, he survived two mid air collisions with German aircraft and scored approximately 44 - 48 victories.

Fokker Dr.I Triplane

Designed in response to the highly maneuverable Sopwith Triplane, the Fokker Dr.I was first flown in 1917 and was one of the most successful and recognizable combat aircraft of WWI, attributing much of its fame to the German WWI ace Manfred von Richthofen – the iconic "Red Baron". Light weight, small size and three wings made the aircraft highly maneuverable and deadly in the hands of an expert pilot but very unforgiving of less experienced pilots. Common for airplanes of that era, a fixed crankshaft configuration allowed the entire engine to spin with the propeller, creating strong gyroscopic forces that adversely affected the airplane's handling under power.
